Over the past 30 years, resilience has become one of the most widely studied aspects of children’s development and well-being, sparking a veritable industry of advice and programs designed to build the resilience of children and youth in order to enhance and protect their mental, emotional, and social health. However, much like self-regulation, not everyone defines resilience in exactly the same way. And, even more to the point, how do we, as caregivers and educators, support resilience? Can resiliency be taught? If so, how?

In this webinar, Dr. Stuart Shanker unpacks the concept of resilience, offering a definition that is both science-based and practical. He will show how Self-Reg supports and enhances children’s resilience, and in turn, their well-being and development.

Topics include:
  • The difference between the self-control-based and Self-Reg–based views of resilience
  • Concepts of resilience coming out of personality psychology, sociology, and biology, and the relationship between the three approaches
  • Resilience as an internal state, not an internal trait.
  • Distinction between maladaptive and adaptive resilience
  • The seeds of resilience: linkages between stress, self-regulation, relationships, and restoration
  • How we can use Self-Reg knowledge and practices to support and enhance resilience in children and youth
